RECORDERS
Recorders are probably the best introduction to the Woodwind family as they are relatively cheap to purchase, light to hold and a sound can be produced easily.

The recorder can be learnt at any age once a child is ready mentally. This could be as young as five years old.

I would always recommend starting on the recorder if a child wants to learn another instrument but isn’t large enough, or hasn’t yet got their front teeth through.

Any music learnt on the recorder will not be wasted. The reading of music is identical between the recorder, flute, clarinet and oboe. The bassoon uses a different clef (Bass clef) but rhythms are still read the same on all instruments.

Recorders come in a whole family of different sizes, with the most common being the descant. The other standard sizes are; sopranino (the smallest), treble, tenor, and bass.
