The flute is probably the most popular woodwind instrument, partly due to its attractive shiny appearance and also due to its velvety sound and ability to blend with other instruments.
It is relatively easy to produce a sound on the flute and students therefore progress to playing recognisable tunes very quickly.

The flute can be played from the age of 8 or 9, although if a child was particularly small he could start on a fife (similar in size to a descant recorder but played like a flute).
